Getting married in Washtenaw County

If you’re planning a wedding in Washtenaw County Clerk / Register of Deeds, the first step is getting a valid State of Michigan marriage license. Marriage ceremonies in Washtenaw County require a valid license, two witnesses, and the county’s ceremony fee.

What you need to do

  1. Apply for a marriage license.
Visit the Washtenaw County Clerk / Register of Deeds office or start with the county’s marriage license information page. The county’s clerk page is the main place to begin.
  2. Bring required documents.
Michigan marriage license applications typically require identification and supporting documents, and county guidance commonly includes proof of address, birth certificates, and Social Security numbers.
  3. Pay the license fee.
Reported fees for Washtenaw County are $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for out-of-state residents, with some sources noting a separate fee option to waive the waiting period.
  4. Wait for the license to become valid.
Michigan has a 3-day waiting period unless waived. The marriage license is also time-limited, so make sure your ceremony happens within the allowed window.
  5. Have the ceremony.
Your ceremony can be performed by our Imam who is authorized to solemnize marriages, and Washtenaw County notes that ceremonies require two witnesses.  There is no fee charged by the Imam, however a donation to the Masjid is appreciated.
  6. Return the signed license.
After the ceremony, the officiant/Imam and witnesses must sign the license so the marriage can be recorded properly.  The Imam will mail the license to the county.
